Mapping custom controller in SteamVR


You can find many controllers for VR games, for developer it is very difficult to catch up code for all the different controllers in the market. It is also quite frustrating for the gamers who feel the default control schemes are counter-intuitive. Thanks to Valve, for coming up with an idea to solve this issue, A new SteamVR Input system has been developed that allow custom bindings of controls.

What Valve has to say about this control system?
“This new input system also allows developers to adapt their games more easily to diverse controllers. Developers control the default bindings for each controller type, and can offer alternate control schemes directly without the need to change the games themselves”

From the user point of view this news system is capable to bind the user’s own configurations for different games, which has many benefits such as it gives opportunity to left-handed players or player with some disability to setup there custom control schemes.
The SteamVR comes an easy to use UI and the support is baked directly to the SteamVR. From the developers view point, Valve hopes that developer will continue to use this system to experiment with various layouts.

This new feature is however currently in beta version, so you will need to opt-in to beta release to use it.
